Causes of Yellow Toenails

Having a yellowish toenail is very dragging. It can even prevent you from having your nails trimmed and have a pedicure due to the embarrassing appearance of it. Lots of people have yellow toenails due to a fungal infection. This can happen in both fingernail and toenail although it is more common in the toes. There are several known causes of yellow toenails. Knowing these will make us avoid further developing of fungal infected toenails.

1. Infection

According to health experts, the most common causes of yellow toenails are due to infection. The moment when fungus develops, it will cause the nail to rise. It will later become thick and cause discoloration. The fungal infection usually penetrates even inside the nails. It makes the nail brittle, rugged and rough. This is a very unattractive look for your toenails.

2. Nail polish

People wearing nail polish are more prone to having toenail infections. This is because of the chemicals used in the nail polish creates a sudden reaction with the nail bed. Most people do not know whether they have allergies with nail polishes. It keeps them using the product while not being aware that it does not suit them. Also, others apply layers upon layers of nail polish making the nail beds unable to get rid of the dirt inside. If you like to be free from any threats of nail fungus, then the best thing to do is avoid using nail polish. If you can not, just choose the hypoallergenic ones. There are also medicated nail polishes that cure the fungus if it has already developed in the nails.

3. Closed shoes.

If we wear closed shoes for long periods, the fungi can develop inside the nails. To avoid this, we need to wear breathable foot wear. The use of cotton sock is also helpful because it absorbs the sweat that is being secreted by the pores.

4. Poor hygiene.

Some people neglect the importance of having clean feet. When we leave our feet unattended and unclean, it may cause fungal infections to develop in the nails. We need to regularly wash our feet so that all the dirt will be removed.

5. Injuries.

We sometimes injure our nails by bumping them. This will create sliding inside the nail bed when not cured immediately. After that, it will become moist appealing to the bacteria to live in the nails. If ever you bump your toes, apply ice pack immediately. It will stop any swilling inside the nails to prevent further infections.

These causes of yellow toenails can happen to everyone. They all invite the bacteria to live inside. Actually, these yellow nails are just living organizations looking for a damp and dark area to live. If you avoid any of these causes of yellow toenails, you can be sure to be free from any fungal infections.
